‘Swing Life Away’ by Rise Against

In case you are unaware, today I’m getting married and hopefully hitched by this point (and yes, I’m writing this many months in advance).

So while the past me reflects on the momentous day that I’ll probably be more paranoid about the sweat stains on my shirt rather than I’ll be spending the rest of my life to my wonderful girlie, or wife, Kerrie, I bring you today’s special Musical Friday on off that is in fact the song for our first dance; ‘Swing Life Away’ by Rise Against.

It’s an odd song to pick as a first dance when you take a look at the lyrics with the opening verse being very unsure. But as the song develops it becomes clear that although not everything is perfect, it is perfect as long as it’s times that have been shared with a loved one.

One of the lines that really gets me is

We live on front porches and swing life away
We get by just fine here on minimum wage
If love is a labor, I’ll slave ’til the end
I won’t cross these streets until you hold my hand
Until you hold my hand

To me that really gets the song in a nut-shell; no matter what happens it’s worth it. The struggle, the laughs, the tears, the memories; it’s worth it.
